Postpartum Rehabilitation: Recovering Strength, Function, and Confidence

Postpartum rehabilitation supports full-body healing after childbirth by rebuilding core strength, restoring pelvic floor function, and returning you to everyday movement. Whether your birth was vaginal or by C-section, a personalized plan can reduce pain, improve bladder and bowel control, and guide a safe return to the activities you love—lifting, running, intimacy, and sport.

Understanding Postpartum Rehabilitation

Postpartum rehabilitation is a structured, evidence-based process designed to help you recover from pregnancy and delivery. During your rehabilitation you will learn to reconnect with your core and pelvic floor, resolve pain with intimacy, and restore strength for daily activities and return to recreation and exercise.

With pelvic floor Physical Therapy we can work to resolve a variety of issues including pelvic floor dysfunction, diastasis recti (abdominal separation), C-section scar tightness or sensitivity, low back and hip pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse symptoms such as heaviness or pressure.

What to Expect from a Postpartum Rehabilitation Program

Your first visit typically includes a thorough medical and birth history, review of healing, assessment of posture and movement, screening for diastasis, and discussion of your goals. With your consent, a pelvic floor exam—external and/or internal—may be performed to evaluate strength, coordination, pressure management, and tissue health.

All treatments are individualized and may include:

  • Manual therapy
  • Pelvic floor retraining for strength, endurance, relaxation, and coordination
  • Progressive core and full-body exercise tailored to your stage of healing, including diastasis recti exercises
  • Pain management strategies and activity modification
  • Breathwork to coordinate the diaphragm and pelvic floor
  • Education on bowel and bladder habits, return-to-sex guidance, lifting, and baby care, including how to perform kegels after pregnancy correctly

Most patients are seen on a 1-2x/week basis for anywhere from 6-16 weeks depending on progress. Physical Therapy can begin as soon as 6 weeks postpartum.

Getting started is quick and simple: request an appointment online or call our front desk. We provide a complimentary insurance benefit check and can discuss self-pay options before your first visit.

Come with your questions—whether you want to return to running, lift with confidence, or resume intimacy—and we will build a postpartum rehabilitation plan that fits your life and includes the right mix of postpartum recovery exercises.
